Your 40's Are The Springboard To The Rest Of Your Life |
Our 40's set the stage for the rest of our lives, and how we manage our health during this decade is so important. It is also the decade where most women will find themselves navigating peri-menopause. The first sensations of hot flashes, night sweats and irregular periods may begin somewhere in the 40's. Often accompanied by a peak in sexual energy no wonder this stage in a woman's life is sometimes referred to as The Enchantress, or second adolescence. The 40's is a bit of a wake up call all around, where optimum health becomes the best investment for the future. On the physical level, some women have found symptoms of menopause can be alleviated by removing certain things from their diet. Cutting back or completely removing stimulants, such as coffee and alcohol, and dare I say even chocolate, can improve everything from mood instability to night sweats. Hot flashes can be lessened by taking away hot spicy foods and also the removal of the deadly nightshades, including tomatoes, potatoes and eggplant.
Hot flashes can differ in strength and magnitude, in the same way as a birthing contraction or earthquake. Sometimes hot flashes can be so intense they can feel as though the whole of your insides are on fire, there are differing views about what these powerful hot surges are. Some believe this to be our Kundalini energy or power rising, other's say it is related to something we need to add or remove nutritionally. Either way this is a purification on many levels, heralding the way to a new way of life, a new you, preparing to step into your greater self.
The uncertainty, the physical symptoms and what the process towards the ceasing of the menses brings, is the not so silent footstep of the wise woman advancing, we can either welcome her in graciously or be prepared to struggle with her, just know she's coming anyway and she takes up a lot of room, now is the time to start clearing out the old and make the space so she can come in and sit comfortably within you. Honour her and she will bring you gifts and treasures also.
Anything that is, or has been repressed and not dealt with will undoubtedly rise up to the surface now and can often manifest as physical symptoms. Some of the lesser known peri and menopausal symptoms are heart palpitations, anxiety and panic attacks. If this is the case and all the medical, physical check ups give you an all clear, its time to get some talk therapy and compliment it with some therapeutic movement such as gentle trauma informed yoga or Feldenkrais, past trauma can get stored in the body at a cellular level and may need acknowledgement and release. New research into intergenerational trauma or Epigenetics is also proving that we may also be storing the trauma from previous generations as ancestral trauma. Keeping this in mind if you haven't done so already, starting some form of spiritual daily practice maybe worth exploring, most ancient traditions have ways to honour the ancestor's and have ceremonies to heal the genetic lineage.
The 40's give you an opportunity to create a vision of the person you want to be in your elder life, by strengthening your intuition, your inner guidance and knowing, in all aspects of your life, whether it be relationships, parenting, work/business, spiritual, physical, cognitive/mental or emotional.
Becoming an elder does not mean you have to get old, on the contrary, your most vital and enriched years are yet to come, all designed by you!
